The story

Inside the castle, math is the tool the group needs to solve real problems. Guisla, the guide, leads the explorers through the castle grounds, the market and the tower, and every challenge asks the team to share out the work and check the calculations together.

«El castell medieval» is the original Catalan title. The game can be played in Catalan, Spanish and English.

Who Guisla is

Guisla is the game's guide character, in the same warm clay-animation style as the rest of the catalog. She presents each challenge and keeps the story moving.

Three challenges

The adventure is a complete story built around three blocks of math in context.

  1. Measuring the land

Lengths, areas and units to share out the castle's land fairly.

  2. The market

Buying with coins, giving change and applying percentages.

  3. Defending the tower

Planning together, using everything learned along the way.

What students learn

  • Measuring lengths and calculating areas, choosing the right unit.
  • Using coins, paying exact amounts and giving change.
  • Applying percentages in a concrete situation.
  • Checking calculations as a team and explaining them to others.

Curriculum fit

Designed for 5th and 6th grade of primary school, in the math blocks of measurement and money, and percentages. We do not list official curriculum codes here; we can help you relate the session to your own programming.

What a session looks like

  1. ~5 min

    Room calibration

The facilitator marks the four corners and the map reaches all headsets at once.

  2. ~3 min

    Meeting Guisla

The guide explains the mission and how to move around.

  3. 25 min

    Cooperative mission

Land, market and tower: challenges that require coordination.

  4. ~5 min

    Wrap-up

Recap of what was learned, group photo and certificate.

Teacher's guide

Before

Review units of length and area and how a percentage is calculated. Ask the class how a medieval castle was organized.

During

Notice who measures, who calculates and who checks. Those roles are a good starting point for the discussion afterwards.

After

Rework the problems on paper with different numbers, or design a market with prices and discounts for another group to solve.
